Approximately 71% of businesses in the United States utilize Instagram for the benefit of their business. Additionally, 90% of Instagram users follow a business and a majority look on Instagram for their online purchases. But besides the amount of reach that Instagram can provide what other benefits can come from an Instagram business account? 1. Instagram Professional Dashboard     The Instagram Professional Dashboard offers a plethora of tools that can help you manage and promote your business account. After adding information such as your business hours, location and contact information you can then utilize features such as Instagram Shopping, Branded Content features and promotions. Experimenting with these features will help you find the most effective mix for your business. 2. Post Versatility     Instagram offers a variety of post types to help you keep your conte

Guest Speaker at Dicke: Eleanor VanderMeulen

Image
This Wednesday guest speaker Eleanor VanderMeulen, a legal tax consultant from Caplin and Drysdale, came and spoke to any interested business students. Initially, I was worried that she would be talking solely about her practice. While it is an interesting field and something that I don't know much about, I was worried that I wouldn't be able to keep up with the information that she would be sharing.  Luckily, Eleanor talked to us about her experience and time at Ohio Northern University and how we can get the most out of Ada, Ohio. She gave six key points to help us utilize our time here and set ourselves up for success after college. She had a very impressive list of accomplishments from her time in college and talked about how being involved on campus greatly contributed to her success. However, she also talked about where she fell short and disappointed herself and others. She told us how she handled that disappointment, both responsibly and irresponsibly, and what she did

The Benefit of Changing Mindsets

College can be stressful, as I'm sure we've all figured out by this point. As the homework, readings and tests begin to pile up its understandable that you may be exhausted and irritable. Now, I'm not here to tell you that your life is so great and you shouldn't feel upset. However, by slightly changing the way that you look at things throughout your day you may find it easier to relax, be happy and approach your work with a positive attitude.  One great tactic is the "this but that" tactic. Maybe you just found out that you have a huge homework assignment that you have absolutely no time to do, or maybe you did really bad on an important test. Both of these things suck and while one good thought isn't going to change how you feel about the situation you can prevent it from ruining your day. For example, every time you think about how you failed that test think about something that went right with your day. Think about how nice the weather is, or maybe yo

Chapter 4: The Basics of Facebook

While many of us are already on Facebook with our own personal accounts there is still so much to learn! The vast tools and tricks are only amplified when dealing with a business Facebook account. If you deal with any level of social media marketing, whether you rely on organic reach or pay for target ads, then you need to know how to fully utilize Facebook as an advertising platform.      Why is Facebook so important? Besides being the most popular social media platform Facebook has an average of 2.9 billion users every month and generates an ad revenue of $48.68 billion. The platform offers wide access to consumers with 70% of users visiting the platform once a day and 49% of users visiting multiple times a day. Those numbers don't include how long users spend on the Facebook each time they visit. Because there is so much opportunity for reach Facebook is a must-have in your social media marketing mix. Below are a couple of things that you can do to get the most out of your

3 Changes I Made After the First Round of the Simternship

I never thought that I would be participating in a simulation internship for a grade but here I am! Honestly, I've enjoyed it a lot more than I expected but I know that I could definitely be doing better. After seeing the results from the first round I was a little discouraged, but I took my performance into consideration and have identified three things that I can do better continuing in this Simternship.  1. Post, Post, Post! The first round I did not post nearly enough! There is enough content to keep those posts flowing across multiple different platforms. In addition, once you've purchased specific content you have access to it for future posts. Posting multiple times a day or week across multiple platforms will increase your engagement and overall revenue.  2. Analyze Post Success Not Just Platform Success While it is important to keep track of which platforms generate the greatest return on investment you also need to keep track of which posts are performing the best. I

Chapter 3: 2 Acronyms that Could Make or Break Your Social Media Marketing Plan

Social media has become the bread and butter of the marketing world. With so many users and demographics that are reachable on social media it seems almost impossible to ignore the potential that these platforms hold. But just posting on social media isn't enough. Companies spend billions of dollars every year on social media marketing and advertising to push their products to consumers.  To do this effectively companies develop social media marketing plans that are contrived from several different methods and strategies. Often, the marketing tactics will change for each platform, but a consistent tone is often established for the brand across all platforms. If you're not sure where to start when it comes to developing a social media marketing plan there are two acronyms that can help you get started. The first is S.W.O.T. and the second is S.M.A.R.T. S.W.O.T. stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. Many businesses use this acronym in determining both tr

Podcasting, There's More than Meets the Eye

This week we were tasked with creating a podcast interviewing a social media professional. I was struggling to think of a social media professional that I knew. Then I realized that I had a unique angle on the situation. After a conversation with Dr. Aggie, she approved the idea of interviewing a business who has never used social media before. While this may make sense for a business that is just getting started, I interviewed Steve Emerick, a general manager at a family business nearly 50 years old. I really enjoyed getting to take a different angle on this project and getting to ask questions that gave me insight into how a business could be affected by not utilizing social media.  Steve talked about the history of the business and how it went from one employee to a long-lasting family business. After getting some background I was able to ask questions pertaining to why the business hasn't utilized social media and how they plan to change that in the future. "We've alwa

Textbook Chapter 2: 10 Things to Improve Your Personal Brand

Image
Growing up when social media was really beginning to boom, I was always warned about the negative impacts that social media can have on your life. How nothing ever truly disappears and no matter how small something may be it can always come back to bite you. However, as I've become more active on social media, I've realized how important it can be to have a social media presence. Which is exactly the point that this chapter makes. Make no mistake, no social media presence could debatably be better than a terrible one. This chapter goes into depth on how to properly curate a positive and professional social media presence. It reviews different practices and mindsets that you can utilize to put yourself in the best light for potential employers.  Build Your Brand  Platform You need to determine what platforms are appropriate for your personal use and your professional use. Platforms such as LinkedIn and X (Twitter) are typically used when creating a professional social media pres
