The Benefit of Changing Mindsets

College can be stressful, as I'm sure we've all figured out by this point. As the homework, readings and tests begin to pile up its understandable that you may be exhausted and irritable. Now, I'm not here to tell you that your life is so great and you shouldn't feel upset. However, by slightly changing the way that you look at things throughout your day you may find it easier to relax, be happy and approach your work with a positive attitude.

One great tactic is the "this but that" tactic. Maybe you just found out that you have a huge homework assignment that you have absolutely no time to do, or maybe you did really bad on an important test. Both of these things suck and while one good thought isn't going to change how you feel about the situation you can prevent it from ruining your day. For example, every time you think about how you failed that test think about something that went right with your day. Think about how nice the weather is, or maybe you're having a really good hair day, or maybe you got to catch up with a friend you haven't seen in a while. By combatting something negative with multiple different positive experiences you then change the mindset from "Man, I had a really bad day," to "Man, failing that quiz sucked but at least the rest of my day was good."

Another way you can improve your daily outlook is by making time to do something you enjoy every single day. Whether it's for 15 minutes or two hours taking time to do something that you can control and you enjoy can help you feel less confined to the things that you have to do. Additionally, this by no means has to be something productive. If the activity you enjoy is going on a run, or being a part of a club or organization then that is great! But remember that taking a nap, playing video games or just going on a drive are all just as valid as activities that are deemed productive. Taking time for yourself throughout the day isn't about getting the most out of your time but allowing yourself to relax and enjoy something without any additional stressors.

While these are only two examples of the many that exist, they're easy to integrate into a busy schedule or stressed mindset. While these changes may not help immediately and may feel uncomfortable at first, it's still important that you find a way to make yourself comfortable in your current environment.
