A Weekend in Nashville: ICON 2023

Over this past weekend I had the amazing opportunity to visit Nashville, Tennesse with ONU's PRSSA chapter. While in Nashville our group attended ICON which is the national conference for the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) and the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). During this conference I was able to hear from so many incredible speakers and also watch our own professor, Dr. Aggie, receive an amazing and well-deserved award.

Out of all of the sessions that I attended there were two that stuck out to me the most. The first was a talk on international public relations and crisis communications. With my primary professional interest being in international and cultural public relations strategies the session was more than informative and really solidified my interest.

The other session that really stood out to me talked about creating and maintaining meaningful journalist relations. This session really highlighted the importance of journalism in coordination with public relations. The speaker shared his strategy on how to make that initial connection with a journalist and then maintain and grow your relationship and network.

Finally, on Monday we all got to watch Dr. Aggie receive the PRSA Outstanding Educator Award! This award recognized her exceptional contribution to public relations education. We all cheered for her and we even had little signs with her face on it to show our love and support. We even connected with a recent graduate, Alyson Hoffman, who spent time with us throughout the week and helped us celebrate and support Aggie.

Overall, this was such an amazing experience! From learning firsthand from professionals in the public relations field to networking with them at breakfasts I was constantly awed. The opportunities and experiences provided by this conference is something I have never had before but I hope to continue in the future.
